Workload Statement for Unit 18 Faculty
Labor Studies

6 courses (4 units or more) per academic year = 100% FTE (6 IWC) for the year 

1 course (4 units) per quarter= 50% FTE (1 IWC) for that quarter

1 course (2 units) per quarter = 25% FTE (0.5 IWC) for that quarter

1 honors discussion section in a lecture = 25% FTE (0.5 IWC) for that quarter 

Labor Studies 495 = 25% FTE (0.5 IWC) for that quarter

Assigned students in tutorial courses, such as 195B, 197, 199, et cetera, as well as formally advising or mentoring students, including honors work, thesis or dissertation advising. Lecturers who wish to accept students in this capacity must have a teaching assignment in the same quarter in which they are advising and they must obtain the chair's prior approval before accepting students. The chair's approval will authorize the lecturer to be assigned up to 6 students per quarter under the following tiered scale:

  • 1-2 students = 3% FTE (.05 IWC) for that quarter
  • 3-4 students = 5% FTE (.10 IWC) for that quarter
  • 5-6 students = 8% FTE (.15 IWC) for that quarter

Additional duties of an administrative or educational nature during the year, such as curriculum development and research; community-engaged learning and placement coordination; capstone requirement planning for the major; outreach activities presentations at national and international conferences; developing and/or providing workshops for educators; and other departmental services can = up to 25% (0.5 IWC) per quarter. Written prior approval must be given by the Chair, and there must be a teaching assignment in the same quarter an equivalency is assigned.
