Sample Visiting Scholar Appointment Letter

September __, 2015

Dear ____________________;

On behalf of ____________________ at UCLA, I am pleased to extend an invitation to you as a Visiting Scholar for the period of September 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. This letter outlines your status and privileges as a Visiting Scholar.

Status as a Visiting Scholar enables you to participate generally in the scholarly life of the University community, and specifically affords you the following:

• Library access during the term of your Visiting Scholarship

• UCLA Bruincard

• Laboratory Access

• Reimbursement

• Parking

If the department authorizes a UCLA ID, with it comes the potential for cost of living reimbursement, stipend etc. Go to The UCLA CALL, Appendix 13 for more specifics.

You will need to provide evidence of satisfactory health insurance and self-support. Also, you will be bound by the University rules on sexual harassment, laboratory safety regulations, etc. UCLA is a tobacco-free environment.

The status of Visiting Scholar also gives you the possibility of attending courses with the Instructor’s permission. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer designated office space or library borrowing privileges, and the position does not come with funding. However, while we do not have offices designated for Visiting Scholars, we will do our best to provide shared office space during your stay.

We welcome you to the Institute and hope you will participate in all our activities. You have been selected as a Visiting Scholar because your research is of great interest to us and is relevant to the general mission of ______________. Accordingly, you are expected to make a presentation on your research to graduate students and faculty during your term.

If you have questions about any of the above, please do not hesitate to contact myself or _______________.

We are delighted you will be joining our community, and we welcome you to _______________.
