What is an Academic Leave?
Per UC Academic Personnel Manual (APM) 700, Leaves of Absence/General, academic year appointees are expected to be present from the beginning of the Fall Quarter through the end of the Spring Quarter. Any appointee returning after the beginning of the Fall Quarter or leaving before the end of the Spring Quarter and any fiscal-year appointee who renders service throughout the calendar year (12 months) should apply in advance for a leave of absence in accordance with policy.
The UCLA Annual Academic Calendar lists each academic year's service period and the official university holidays that apply to all.
Leave paperwork is required for all academic appointees who will be absent from campus for 7 or more consecutive calendar days. Appointees who leave the campus prior to obtaining formal approval are in violation of UC and UCLA policy.
** Academic employees under collective bargaining agreements should consult the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) pertaining to their title.

When May I Apply for a Leave?
While some leaves may arise without substantive notice, it is generally best practice to apply for leaves of one quarter or more at least one quarter in advance.
For research-related leaves or leaves that can be anticipated and planned in advance, best practice is to consult with the department chair and/or academic department at least one quarter or more before submitting leave paperwork.
