The Council on Academic Personnel requests that letters soliciting extramural evaluations for promotion to Associate Professor or Professor in the Regular Professorial Series indicate these are tenured positions within the University of California System. Such a statement should be added, where appropriate, in the first paragraph of the following model formats.
Dear Professor___________: The Department of ___________ has under consideration the advancement of Professor ___________ Above-Scale. Under University of California academic personnel policy, the highest level of recognition may be granted to the most distinguished faculty (1) whose work of sustained and continuing excellence has attained national and international recognition and broad acclaim, reflective of significant impact; (2) whose university teaching performance is excellent; and (3) whose university and/or public service is highly meritorious. This entails consideration of the individual’s achievements over his/her entire academic career including the most recent period. This recognition carries the title of “Distinguished Professor.” A brief description of the standard required for advancement may be helpful. For positions at the professorial level, the University of California has established a hierarchy of steps, ranging from Step I to Step IX. We are seeking to advance Professor __________ beyond Step IX to “Above-Scale,” the highest category of advancement within the UC system. This advancement takes account of Professor __________’s entire body of scholarship. For your convenience, I am enclosing copies of Professor __________’s complete bibliography and latest publications. [incorporate statement on confidentiality or include on a separate page] Your assistance in providing this analysis will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely,
